Awkward moment Rangers manager Philippe Clement is mistaken for Man Utd hero on live TV
RANGERS boss Philippe Clement enjoyed a successful playing career. But he didn’t quite reach the heights of the man he’s been bizarrely confused with by a Sky Sports pundit. PARangers boss Philippe Clement[/caption] Belgian gaffer Clement has enjoyed an excellent start to life as Rangers manager, leading the Light Blues to the League Cup at the end of the last year and battling for the Premiership title and Scottish Cup. Having also won the Belgian league as a manager, Clement also secured plenty of major honours as a player. Playing at the heart of defence or in midfield, Clement was part of the Club Brugge sides that won the Belgian Pro League in 2003 and 2005. But the 50-year old certainly didn’t quite have the playing career of the man he’s been confused to! Ahead of the big 3pm weekend matches, Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday panel were poring over some big moments from the previous week. Attentions turned to last Sunday’s incredible 3-3 Old Firm draw between Rangers and Celtic, with refereeing expert Mike Dean analysing John Beaton’s performance. The panel was looking at referee Beaton’s decision to chalk-off Cyriel Dessers‘ goal that was initially allowed to stand on-field. Beaton reversed that decision after VAR intervention, but his signal left many confused with plenty of punters actually thinking he was pointing to confirm a goal had been given. Dean said: “What doesn’t help the ref either, he’s looked at the screen and disallowed it – but he’s pointed as if he’s given the goal. “The reaction of the stadium, the all thought he’d given the goal. You don’t just point to where it is!” Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson was on the Soccer Saturday panel. As ex-Premier League ref Dean was commenting on the incident, the clip being shown cut to a shot of Rangers boss Clement. And Merson said: “Well, Jaap Stam he’d given it!” Whether or not Merson ACTUALLY thinks Stam is the Rangers manager or if he was drawing attention to their somewhat similar appearances remains to be seen! Stam was the most expensive defender in football history when Sir Alex Ferguson‘s United shelled-out a then huge £10.6million to sign him 26 years ago. He won major honours in Italy and the Netherlands, also scooping three Premier League titles and the Champions League with Man Utd. The clip of Merson ‘confusing’ Clement with Stam went viral on social media and plenty of fans had their say.
