Celtic icon Neil Lennon ‘wants to sign ex-Rangers star’ for Rapid Bucharest project – but faces major competition
CELTIC legend Neil Lennon has only been in his new job for a week. But he’s already being linked with a host of familiar names to Scottish football fans as he looks to put his own stamp on his squad. GettyLennon was back in Scotland for punditry duties at Hampden[/caption] PAHe’s reportedly eyeing a move for Greg Docherty[/caption] PA:Press AssociationThe midfielder played for Rangers between 2018 and 2020[/caption] Lennon was confirmed the new Rapid Bucharest boss last week, making a return to management for the first time in a year-and-a-half. The 52-year old penned a two-year deal with the Romanian club, being confirmed in the role the day after Rapid played their final match of their league season. Almost as soon as Lennon had been appointed boss, reports emerged that he was targeting moves for some familiar faces. Celtic defender Stephen Welsh – a man given his senior Hoops debut by Lennon – is a transfer target for the new Rapid boss. And so too, according to reports, is Dundee United centre-back Ross Graham. Now it appears Lennon has his eye on a former RANGERS midfielder. Greg Docherty became a free agent last week when it was revealed his time at Hull City was coming to an end. The 27-year old has spent the past four years with the Tigers having made the move from Ibrox in 2020. Docherty was snapped-up by the Gers in January 2018 after coming through the Hamilton Academical academy. It never quite worked out at Ibrox with Docherty making just 11 league appearances before leaving after Steven Gerrard become manager. Having had a couple of loan spells out of Ibrox following Gerrard’s arrival, Docherty made his permanent exit by joining Hull where he went on to become a key man. Now, he’s looking for a new club. According to the Daily Record, Lennon wants Docherty to join him in Bucharest. But he’s facing major competition to land him. SunSport understands that Polish top division outfit Legia Warsaw also want to sign the former Scotland under-21 international. Docherty also has plenty of suitors from English Championship clubs with Blackburn Rovers credited with an interest.
