The 29-year-old however instead joined Turkish giants Besiktas as a free agent. He has made 27 appearances this term for the Super Lig outfit, but has fallen out of favour following a bright start. And reports in Amartey’s west African home country claim Rodgers will seek to reunite with the 53-cap international this summer. Amartey spent over seven seasons in the Premier League, playing a small part in Leicester’s shock title win of 2016 after arriving that January from FC Copenhagen. He went on to help the east Midlands club win a first-ever FA Cup under Rodgers’ management in 2021. The Northern Irishman is now thought eager to add Amartey to Hoops’ squad as he plots to win a fourth straight Premiership title next May. All told the midfielder made 145 senior appearances for Leicester, scoring three goals. Besiktas are unlikely to seek a high fee for Amartey following their disappointing campaign. The fallen Istanbul giants are fifth in Turkey‘s Super Lig with one match left, a whopping 43 points behind leaders and city rivals Galatasaray. He bid to bring the then Charlton frontman to Scotland but was outdone by Everton. Since then the Nigerian international has starred for Fulham, RB Leipzig and Atalanta – firing a stunning hat-trick against previously unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen to win the Europa League in Dublin. Rodgers said: “I go back to my first spell here at Celtic and I met with Ade when he was going to be leaving Charlton and we looked to get him up here at that time, but it was so early in the window that by the time it finished we couldn’t afford him. “The money was too much for us and he ended up going to Everton. “But I always kept in contact with him and when I was at Leicester and he was out at Red Bull I had the chance to take him on loan so I took him in and he was absolutely brilliant – what a professional lad he is.” Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
