Rangers boss Philippe Clement breaks silence on Jack Butland own goal as he laments MORE stars breaking down injured
PHILIPPE CLEMENT admitted his Rangers stars were left “gutted” by their last-gasp Battle of Britain loss. Gers suffered stoppage-time defeat at Old Trafford when Bruno Fernandes pounced moments after Cyriel Dessers’ dramatic equaliser. And Clement was left to lament an agonising loss and more injury woes after THREE more players limped out of the Europa League tie – Leon Balogun, Connor Barron and Vaclav Cerny. He said: “It’s mixed feelings in the dressing room. We’re gutted that we lost because we played to win. “The team wanted to do something special here and they were really close to doing that. “In these circumstances, with all the injuries and the players we missed, I’m very proud. “They stuck to the plan, followed the tactics, were brave on the ball and created chances. “There are a lot of positives but we are disappointed by the result. “We had eight players who missed out then we needed to make two changes at half-time and put two players out of position. “You see it’s a group that wants to work and stick to the plan and do everything for the colours of the club. I can’t ask more. “We can speak about the details and the mistakes. I think there were a lot of positives and really great experiences for a lot of young players like Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis who came on. “They’re only 18 years old and they never played at the highest level. “Yet they went onto this pitch and were brave.” Clement refused to blame Butland for his mistake – but was left devastated for hitman Dessers. He added: “Jack saved us also a few times in the second half, so that’s the life of a goalkeeper. “So I’m not going to be focused solely on that. “With Cyriel, he scored a very good goal and then you see that it’s not the decisive one, otherwise he would have been the hero.” In spite of the defeat, Rangers have QUALIFIED for the knockout phase of the competition. Clement added: “To get into the top eight, we need to do a big effort against Union and we need luck with the other results. “But to be in top 24 was the ambition before starting. “We are very close but not there yet.” United boss Ruben Amorim was thrilled with the result. He said: “We created the best chances and I felt we deserved to win. “It was a victory that we truly needed at this moment. “We did well and played better with the ball. “We started well and lost control of the game because of small, bad decisions. “I think the lads did well. “Even when we suffered the loss of the goal, we recovered and it was a good victory.” Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
